   political figure
   Born in Grenoble, Jean-Joseph Mounier was elected deputy for the Third Estate to the Estates General (1789), and it was his proposal that led to the swearing of the oath of the Tennis Court (June 20, 1789), which began the revolution of 1789. President of the National Constituent Assembly, he was one of the principal representatives who supported a constitutional monarchy (monarchiens) on the model of Great Britain. Leader of the assembly delegation that was received by King louis XVI on October 5, 1789, he resigned shortly afterward. unsure what direction the Revolution might take, Mounier emigrated to Switzerland (1790-1801), where he edited his Appel au tribunal de l'opinion publique.
